This visionary project centers around the development of a single-family home just 25 feet from the Omaha Sunflower Co-op (OSC) farm, designed to create a hub for grassroots urban agriculture in North Omaha’s Orchard Hill neighborhood.
The property will provide living space and a convenient gathering point for OSC urban farmers. The property will provide residence for 1-2 urban farmers with storage space to support Omaha Sunflower Co-op’s urban farm next door. A serene green landscape will provide a gathering site for education, celebration, and ritual.
The farmhouse will model a new approach to housing with the addition of an ADU to the property, which has ample space for new construction. As the city of Omaha embraces ADUs as a solution to our housing crisis, this urban homestead will be a leading example of this affordable housing approach.
ADU means Accessory Dwelling Unit. They are sometimes called Granny Flats or Accessory Apartments. It’s basically just another smaller house on the same property as an existing home. Thanks to Omaha’s Housing Affordability Action Plan, the zoning code may permit the construction of these structures as soon as 2024.
The ADU built at the urban farmhouse will provide farmer housing within a thriving neighborhood of urban agriculture projects including:
Omaha Sunflower Cooperative
City Sprouts
Omaha Permaculture
New American farmers
